چکیده

We present the results of an integrated geomorphological and seismo-stratigraphic study based on high resolution marine data acquired in north-western Sicilian continental margin. document for first time five contourite drifts (marked as EM1a, EM2b, EM2, EM3a, EM3b), located slope at depths between ca. 400 1500 m. EM1a,b have been interpreted elongated mounded drifts. are 3 km long, 1.3 wide, a maximum thickness 36 m their center that thins northwards, while EM1b is smaller with up to 24 They internally characterized by seismic packages dominated continuous parallel reflectors. EM2 upper depth 1470 m, it 9.3 more than 3.9 has 65 It consists internal aggradational stacking pattern continuous, moderate amplitude composed mix deposits (Holocene) interbedded turbiditic and/or mass flow deposits. deposited top erosional truncation aged 11.5 ka, so they mostly formed during Holocene. EM3a,b 16 6.7 350 Both sheeted drift due morphology features. The spatial distribution suggests likely generated interaction LIW, deep Tyrrhenian water (TDW) seafloor, playing important role shaping this margin since late Pleistocene-Holocene. may help understand oceanic processes affecting

Lateral Transport of Lithogenic Particles from the Continental Margin of the Southern East China Sea

Geochemical compositions and fluxes of suspended and trapped (settling) particulate matter were studied to elucidate particle sources and transports from the continental margin of southern East China Sea (ECS) to the Okinawa Trough. Experimental results indicate that the abundance of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and lithogenic elements (Al, Fe and Mn) decreases with an increase of distanc...

Report of a Physical Oceanography Research Project over the Southern Continental Shelf of the Caspian Sea

Abstract The study presents monthly variations of seawater properties, monitoring water column stability and stratification over the southern shelf of the Caspian Sea which depends on collecting data. Field measurements were carried out during 13 cruises along the southern boundary of the sea. Spatial and temporal distributions of temperature, salinity and density were investigated. Monthl...

Particulate Barium Fluxes on the Continental Margin: a Study from the Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean)

Particulate biogenic barium (bio-Ba) fluxes obtained from three instrumented arrays moored in the Alboran Sea, the westernmost basin in the Mediterranean Sea, are presented in this study. The mooring lines were deployed over almost one year, from July 1997 to May 1998, and were equipped with sediment traps at ~500-700 m depth, ~1000-1200 m depth and 30 m above the sea floor (~1000-2200 m). The ...

A new active volcano in the Tyrrhenian Sea?

A strong earthquake occurred in 2002 off-shore from the northern coast of Sicily in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy), and was followed by a series of hundreds of aftershocks. Communications through the fibre-optic cable between Palermo and Rome were interrupted a few hours after the occurrence of the main shock. After the required technical checks, the failure point was found a few kilometre...
